The honest answer is that the total cost of a local Melbourne move depends on how many hours the job takes and how many people are working. Everything else is noise.
Typical hourly rate options in Melbourne
- 1 mover with a van: Single items, small deliveries, storage runs.
- 2 movers with a 4 tonne truck: Studios, one and two bedroom homes.
- 3 movers with an 8 tonne truck: Three and four bedroom houses.
- 4 movers with a 12 tonne pantech: Large homes, offices, tight deadlines.
Most Melbourne removalists charge a minimum of 3 to 4 hours, then bill in 15 or 30 minute increments after that. Ask which one applies before you book — a 15 minute increment on a job that runs 20 minutes over can save you the better part of an hour's rate.
How long does each property size take?
- Studio or 1 bedroom unit: 3–4 hours with 2 movers.
- 2 bedroom unit or townhouse: 4–6 hours with 2 movers.
- 3 bedroom house: 6–8 hours with 3 movers.
- 4 bedroom house: 7–9 hours with 3–4 movers.
- 5+ bedroom house: full day with 4 movers, sometimes two trucks.
Add roughly an hour for every flight of stairs without lift access, and another hour if the truck has to park more than about 30 metres from the door. Apartment moves in the CBD, Southbank and Docklands almost always take longer than the same volume in a suburban house because of lift waits and dock bookings.
What about travel and call-out fees?
Nearly every removalist charges something for getting the truck to you and back to base. Some call it a call-out fee, others depot-to-depot time. A fair Melbourne travel charge is 30 to 60 minutes of the hourly rate, or a flat fee based on your suburb. What you should never accept is a vague 'travel time' line that is only calculated after the job is finished.
Extras that inflate the bill
- Packing materials charged per box rather than supplied at cost.
- Fuel levies added as a percentage of the total.
- Heavy item surcharges for fridges, pianos, pool tables and safes.
- Weekend, public holiday and after-hours loadings — usually 10–25%.
- Second trips because the truck was too small for the inventory.
Interstate and backloading prices
Interstate is quoted as a fixed price rather than hourly based on your property size and destination. Backloading — sharing truck space with other customers — typically costs significantly less if you can accept a delivery window rather than a fixed date.
Seven ways to cut the cost of your move
- Move mid-week and mid-month. The first and last three days of the month are the most expensive in Melbourne.
- Be completely packed before the crew arrives — this is the single biggest saving.
- Disassemble beds and tables yourself if you are confident reassembling them.
- Declutter properly. Every box you do not move is time you do not pay for.
- Reserve parking directly outside both properties to shorten the carry.
- Book a slightly larger truck rather than risking a second trip.
- Get three written quotes and compare the inclusions, not just the hourly rate.
At JJ Movers we quote the hourly rate, the crew size, the truck size, the travel fee and the minimum hours in writing before you commit — so the number you approve is the number you pay.
